Portree, Raasay & Central Skye

The main settlement in Central Skye, indeed in the whole of the Isle of Skye, is Portree the Island's capital, but don't get carried away by the idea that a capital is necessarily big, there is many a small village in the rest Scotland and the UK that is bigger than Portree.

In addition to the capital, this area also includes a number of smaller villages and settlements including Sconser, Torvaig & Sligachan as well as the islands of Raasay and Rona.

Portree, or to be more exact Scorrybreac (Sgoirebreac), is the traditional home of the Clan MacNicol, the Nicolsons of Scorrybreac.

Sconser is the main point of access to the island of Raasay, being the departure point for the Calidonian MacBrayne ferry to and from Raasay.

Sligachan is probably best known for its views of both the Cuillin Hills and the Red Hills (sometimes called the Black and Red Cuillin). Many a mountaineer has set off from Sligachan for a fine day in the hills and many a fine salmon has come from the river of the same name.
